On Monday, March 10, 2025, a man allegedly shot at two occupants (including a minor) of another vehicle during what authorities have dubbed a “road rage incident.” The shooting was only one of at least five different shooting incidents that occurred on the same night and into Tuesday morning, according to WCAU and WPVI-TV. The incidents left seven people injured. Police are currently looking for the man they believe committed the crime and asking the public for help locating him.
About the Philadelphia Road Rage Incident Shooting
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, an unidentified male was driving at the intersection of 42nd and Girard Ave. Nearby footage from surveillance cameras shows the driver with his head out the window while appearing to yell at a vehicle driving to his left. Video footage also shows the man firing his gun out of his car at the occupants of the other vehicle when they both reach the stoplight before the man fled the scene.
The occupants of the other vehicle included a 20-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy. The boy was shot in the left arm, while the woman suffered a graze wound to the chest. Both sought emergency treatment and are considered in stable condition.
Police provided the following description of the man suspected of committing the Philadelphia road rage shooting:
- Black man
- Bald
- Full beard
- Believed to be between 40 and 45 years old
They also provided a description of the vehicle the man was driving:
- Silver 2016 or 2017 Honda Civic
- Unknown tag
- Body damage to both front quarter panels
- Missing passenger-side front hub cap
- White vanity tag on the front bumper
Police are cautioning the public not to approach the suspect if they spot him and to instead report his whereabouts by calling 215-686-TIPS (8477) or filling out an anonymous tip form.
Road Rage and Gun Violence Trends
According to Everytown, road rage shootings have remained alarmingly high over the last few years. In 2018, over 200 people were shot and killed or wounded in road rage incidents. By 2023, the numbers had doubled. In 2023, a person was shot in a road rage incident every 18 hours. From 2014 to 2023, 16 people were killed and 34 were injured in road rage accidents involving guns in Philadelphia, according to KSNV News.
Law Enforcement Response
The Philadelphia Police Department reports that its clearance rate is up from last year, which was significantly up from the previous year. This means that the number of reported crimes that led to an arrest or resolution has increased. The department states that it has had great success using video and technology to help solve these cases.
